OK, Ladies (and gents!) my review of the night that was...
Juke Kartel feat. Stone Parade and Townhallsteps: Prince of Wales Hotel, Saturday 18/4/2009
Well, I went with a friend from work (a JK convert) and as soon as we got into the pub (at about 7.30pm) we waited for a football presentation evening to finish, but it ended up taking a while, so to pass the time...we watched Toby, Tommy, Jay and one of the support band guys eat dinner! (I didn't approach them then...mostly because I personally hate having my dinner interrupted). I did end up having a brief chat to Toby around the bar (you were right Gemma, an awkward and stumbling conversation it was!) I think I made a complete ass of myself but looking back the entire area was so loud I don't think he heard much of what I was saying. I mentioned I had been a member of the forum for about 4 years now and he kinda said 'wow, really?' and then I mentioned that the sheer act of chatting to him was sorta like a Gutter Girl dare...AND HE SEEMED TO KNOW WHO I WAS TALKING ABOUT!!!!! (Yes, GG's, you were segued into a conversation with the Tobster himself!) and then I finally got my act together and thanked him for a great album, and for hitting up the West Coast.
We sat back down (I don't think my friend appreciated the moment as much as I did!) and watched them do a soundtest. They did halves of 'Save Me' and 'My Baby' before sitting down again and we were thinking 'what a huge tease!!!!', but a girl sitting near me noticed I knew the lyrics and assumed I was a fan, so we started chatting about how we hoped the moron drunk chicks down front would leave (if anyone can clue me in, these chicks were drinking blue stuff out of jam jars...what was it?) because they were acting like morons and really throwing themselves at the band despite the fact they had no idea who they were.
Finally (at about 9.30-10pm) the first support act started, The Stone Parade. The lead singer (Greg, I think) was such a sweetie, signing a CD for me after his set! They were a rock band out of Sydney, and even they commented on the front row drunk chicks saying that they were the rowdiest bunch they'd played for in a long time. Not being overly familiar with the band at all, all I can say is that they were pretty good. I brought their album and will get around to listening to it properly...eventually!
There was about 20 minutes between Stone Parade and the next group, Townhallsteps, but we saw some pretty weird things that reminded me why pubs aren't my scene. The main one was walking back from the bar after getting a diet coke and hearing someone behind me slurr 'hey baby'. Looking back, fucking funny stuff, but not being used to that stuff, it really hit me for six! Then we saw a drunk guy in front of us throw a chair at his friend (literally, this stuff was about a foot in front of me) but it ended up hitting the chick I was talking to before, and she went OFF! The security guard ended up chucking them out and that was the last I heard of them.
At about 11pm, the next band started. Townhallsteps were rock with a punk twist. I thought they sounded good on paper but I didn't end up enjoying them too much.
At about 11.25pm (FINALLY!!!!!) Juke Kartel started, stating before the set started that this was probably the most intimate performance they'd ever done. By that point, there were about 20 (give or take) of us around the fairly small stage. Yippee! Front row at Juke Kartel! I've misplaced my set list so bear with me here: Thye played 8 songs of what was supposed to be a 10 song set. I remember them saying they got in late because someone put regular fuel in the diesel tank or something. I think the songs they missed were 'Highway' (which I was SO looking forward to!) and 'Save Me' (which I was looking forward to MORE!). The photo where the girl is sitting between Toby's legs was during an acousitc performance on 'If Only' (awesome performance too) Toby said something about this being like someone's lounge room, all cosy and whatknot, and when one girl asked if she could sit on stage, he invited them all up. I'd love to say I was one of them but, alas, I was not (apart from wanting to bring back some awesome photos...where I wanted to sit would have been right in Dale's way!). 'If Only' had everyone singing along at the chorus and seemed like a very special moment for everyone in the room because of how it was performed. The 'Throw It Away' performance was awesome, even though I think only about 4 people there had ever heard of JK before then, the sheer energy of the performance and the charisma of the guys on stage really shone through so by the end everyone was singing along: it was really impossible at that moment to hate them, the same with when they played 'Whatcha Gonna Do?'. Their ability to sweep the crowd, however small, into a frenzy is what will carry these guys to the top. When they played album songs which not many people had heard (like 'On Fire', 'Innocence' (Ha! I remember now! 'Innocence' was the opener, and one hell of a way to kick off the evening!) and 'Scars') people were still getting into it on a level where you'd think they were long time fans, waiting for the night as feverently as I did. By the time the last song was to be played, we knew that they had to leave the stage as soon as they could and get through the last song quickly (by this point I thought poor Jay's arms were about to fall off! 'Whatcha Gonna Do' was second last and had to be chosen quickly so they wouldn't lose time). The final song of the night was 'My Baby', in full! It was a perfect way to finish the night, a sorta old/new song that everyone enjoyed (not to mention my personal favourite JK song at the moment, so it made me incredbily happy to hear it!). Plus that line 'you stumble when I slip the tongue' drew some gasps and sighs from the large number of women there (by that I mean the ratio of ment to women...about 5 women for every one man!). I left the building not only with a pounding headache and the overwhelimg feeling that I might vomit, but with a great sense of satisfaction that it had ended up as such a great night, and filled with the possibility that JK can only get bigger and greater from there.
9/10
I am pretty sure your audience, dear Alex, will agree with me: Good things come to those who wait. Thank you, doll!
Great pics and review Alex!

Awww so happy you had such a great night Alex (aside from chair throwing and drunk ladies...but that just adds to the rock n roll atmosphere lol).
Alex thanks for your amazing review. Can't believe you were there without me knowing. You should have come said hello...or did you? lol
I'll be back when I have a little more time to share my perspective on the WA shows.
Yay Alex!! I am cheering so loudly for you babe!!!
Sounds like you had a truly amazing and awesome time. And I am SO PROUD of you for having that awkward stumbling conversation I promised you would have...and now you have nothing to regret!!
I think I need to re-read your review. It was worth the wait!!! Thanks so much xx
I was so drunk, my memories of mine are a lil vague! (But I know I LOVED it)
LOL hubby came with me. I didn't get to meet the boys that night but it was an amazing show. I didn't know you guys to share it with even though I know you were all there.
Someone (and i think it was you Nikki) help applied the JK tattoo to my boobie :) in the ladies room.

 yep it was you then. Coz I joined in may last year which was when I first saw the boys live
Bring it on Addy. I've tried to get Vic and Kat to come do reviews so hopefully they work it out!
Aww...alex!!!
It happened. It finally happened. Can you believe it yet??
I'm so happy for you, I'm beaming as I type. A fabulous review of what sounds like an awesome night, and a perfect way to first hear (and meet) JK!! I can't believe how intimate the setting appears in your pics. And what pics they are!! :pheart:
What a night!!
Fantastic review Alex. So great to read how you lost your JK virginity.
There are pics on Toby's FB with those girls that you were talking about with the blue drinks in jars...they look trashy...they would've done my head in, I'm surprised you didn't throw a chair at them yourself. lol. The drink they had looks as though it's just a Blue Caracao and Lemonade...dunno why it's in a jar.
Anyway, fantatic pics and review Alex...it's great to read fresh and new reviews from different people.

(Sorry Glory...Hi baby!....Just dusting myself off after falling on the floor!)

"allegedly" I still stand by the fact that Tigga took me down :gigg: but that arguement doesn't hold up too well since I ended up on top :flirt:
Judging by your pic, I don't recall seeing you there, unless you were hiding somewhere or were the one who the chair landed on! Were you the girl I was chatting to?
No I wasn't hiding lol but I do go by unnoticed alot. I was up front taking pics and videos when JK were on...mainly standing to the right of stage near Dale. Did you have shoulder length burgundy coloured hair? I recall a lady standing next to me taking shots.
I didn't see any chair haha. I did hear a guy had his face smashed in though!
The girls, I wouldn't call them trashy, they were just pissed, having fun....country girls...I'm used to that and I'm sure some of us have exhibited similar behaviour before, or been judged as having done so. They had seen JK the night before at the Amplifier...they came down with James Wilson, the didgeridoo player who opened for JK (lovely man)
It's possible they may pop in here too, girls so go easy on your opinions....everyone's welcome here. I'll get you to edit the "trashy" from your posts if you don't mind....I will too once you're done.
I was just coming in to say the same thing Addy.
I'm sure some of us have exhibited similar behaviour before
Not me...ever :whist:
and yerr...Share the JK love girls! At least they have good taste in music!

It might have appeared burgundy in the light, yes, (it's a chocolate brown colour) and I was on my camera all night! I was on the far right side of the stage!

Adelle, We just know not to talk to you till after the show! (or before, if you are there in time :whist:)
Well, this is my 1st time leaving a show review and I know it is overdue (Sorry Shaz!!! :P) But I really needed to think about what I was going to say.
I was a little disapointed at the turn out, Only cos Shaz and I spent the day in Bunbury sticking up posters here there and everywhere, but I really think the boys took it well, The 'Intimate' Lounge setting just gave them even bigger fans than they already had (and gave us excellent photo ops!!)
But all in all, JK were in WA and what more could a girl ask for??? Show was just fab and the stage presence that all 5 of them have, is amazing. Well worth the 2 and a 1/2 hr (hungover) drive down.
