View Full Version : Hoboken, NJ
My review of the show at Maxwell's in Hoboken, NJ.
The room is extremely small - not much bigger than a large livingroom - with a bar on one side. The stage was also small with not much room to move.
First band up was Gasoline Heart. They are the replacement band for Driveblind. They drove straight from Florida for the show - although one of the members was originally from Long Island. It was only 7 - so there were very few people in the room - maybe 14 or so. I felt bad for them since they had driven so far to get there and hope there are more people for them in future shows. Toby came in about half way through their set - and a few girls approached him to say hello - and take his picture. Then he and the rest of JK sat in the restaurant part of Maxwells - and it looks like people left them in peace to eat.
Next was Whitestarr. There were a few more people - Mischa Barton joined the audience to one side. I think the small size of the stage inhibited them somewhat. When their dancer held up a lit lighter to Gimme a Light - I thought of Rhode Island - and checked where the exit was - which was silly because I don't think there was anything flammable in the room. After their first 2 songs, it was time for me to join the girl, who won the myspace contest, and her sister for the meet & greet.
The Meet & Greet was in the basement in what was essentially a supply closet. We went down first and waited for the band. The two girls were so excited - I thought they were going to faint. JK (minus Eddie who was watching Whitestarr) came down and were immediately welcoming and friendly. Hugs and pictures all around.
I talked to Todd and told him about shutting down the FAKE Toby sites. I asked Dale about their plans after the tour - and found out they will go home for 2 weeks and then return to finish the album. (Toby said it's almost done and they just have to add vocals to 6 tracks.) I talked to Tommy about touring and how tiring it must be traveling from venue to venue.
I talked to Toby a bit - I'm sure I sounded like a complete idiot.
Then it was time for them to perform. Eddie came down - and there were a few more pictures with the myspace contest winners - and then we left so that they could get ready.
The room now had more people - a little over a hundred - which isn't many - but because of the size of the room it was pretty full. They lead off with Firesign. Again the stage was small so not much room for Toby to move around on - but still there were some classic Toby moves. It was very loud, especially since I was right near the amps. Toby talked about the band all catching a cold in NJ (though can't blame NJ - the cold had to come from earlier in the tour) and he talked about how cold it was out. I think he was surprised when the crowd didn't roar with agreement about how cold it was - but we were all thinking about how much colder winter was going to get - and if he thinks last night was cold - wait until he gets to Minnesota and North Dakota in February) I can't remember the full set - but it included If Only, My Baby, Robbie's Song, Save Me, December, and Throw It Away(which started acoustic and then moved to a full rocking version). It seemed like they wanted to stay and play some more - but they were being kicked out because of the show that followed at 10. Dale played the guitar with his teeth on the closing song - or it looks like that's what he was doing.
I don't know if JK were able to meet with fans after the show - the restaurant bar wasn't very large - and since I already had the meet & greet - I left so that other fans could meet with them if the opportunity presented itself.
It was a great night - and everyone should definitely make every effort to see them - I promise you it will be worth it.

TIme for my review... better late than never right?
Ok so I am one half of the two girls that Jayess thought was going to faint at the meet and greet... Believe me she wasn't kidding... we'll get to that in a few
First up was Gasoline Heart. It was their first night on the tour and I was quite impressed. Maxwell's is like a closet, but this point there weren't many people inside yet... They were on for a good 30 minutes but everyone inside seemed to be enjoying them...Midway through their set, I left my little sister (who will be posting her review later) to go outside for a minute. Standing outside, were a few members of Whitestarr that I had met when I first got there in the lounge... Mischa Barton was there as well but not many people really made a gigantic spectacle over it...So I'm outside for a cigarette break and I see this van pull up with one of those mini-trailers on the back and I practically jumped. Within a matter of seconds, I was watching the guys, one by one walk past me. I seriously thought I was going to jump out of my skin...One of the guys from Whitestarr laughed when he heard me breathe this huge sigh of relief after they went inside. In reality, I was thanking god that I didn't collapse...
After Gasoline Heart, Whitestarr went on. The Meet and Greet happened almost like 2 songs into their set but from what I heard, they were incredible. Slightly eccentric, but extremely entertaining.
When it came time to go downstairs into the basement for the meet and greet, I had to coach myself down to walk down each of the steps... seriously as we got closer I was more anxious... fortunately though we were the first ones down there and the guys hadn't come down...For the next few minutes we all made jokes and my sister and I were just trying to breathe... It sounds crazy to be so nervous but for me it was Toby who I watched week after week on my tv and then the rest of Juke Kartel who became an instant obsession the moment I first looked them up back in August.
Leave it to my little sister to say "I hear footsteps," and I thought I was going to pass out right then and there. Fortunately though within the first 30 seconds I was fine. Tommy was the first one downstairs with them all filtering in afterwards. I felt the butterflies in my stomach really go crazy when I was hugging Tommy and could see Toby walking down the stairs behind us.
So the meet and greet was incredible, as expected. All five of them are the absolute sweetest. I've been to bigger meet and greets where you walk down a table saying hi and that being the end of it and this was nothing like that. We took tons and tons of pictures which I will be sure to post later. I talked to Toby about the upcoming album and he said that the music that's on Itunes/Myspace is nothing compared to what's to come...
After the meet and greet, we went back upstairs and after a few minutes the guys were on. I was absolutely blown away. The area up by the stage was far more crowded. The set flew by but regardless, everyone was extremely happy with it. Throw it Away was of course as expected the crowd pleaser but I left there with songs like If Only, and Robbie's song cemented in my brain...
After the show, and a quick good-bye to a few of the guys, My sister and I were walking back to the car. All night we were debating about Baltimore the next night... Prior to the meet and greet and show... I tried to remain logical because I had to babysit the next night and it's a 2 1/2 hour drive... On the walk back to the car however, My sister and I were discussing the sudden JK flu that I had that could only be treated in Baltimore ;)
Hope you enjoyed my review
Pics soon!
Better late then never:
My friend Melissa and I went to the show in Hoboken. She watched one Rockstar episode with me and she was all for coming along. We didn't get to Maxwell's until about 8pm. We both had to work and she didn't get out of work until about 6:30 and then we had to catch the train. As soon as we walked in Toby and the boys were sitting at the table right by the door. I couldn't help but stare and I guess Toby felt eyes on him cause he turned to look at me right when I was walking in. It was just so surreal to see him sitting right there after watching him on TV all summer. We figured we had time before they went on so we got a table to have some drinks. We ended up sitting right across from them right by the bar. At one point Toby got up and came over to the bar and was standing right behind me. I felt his butt brush against me a couple times that's how tight of space was between me and the bar. 8-) We watched them take a shot at the bar and decided it was time to head into the stage area. We got a beer and caught the end of Whitestarr. Once they ended I moved up right to the front of the stage. I was right where they get on and off the stage so I was kind of in the way lol. I was so busy talking to my friend that I didn't see Eddie try and get and by until I heard an "Excuse me sweetie." The show was well you know. Everybody pretty much summed it up. I got a smile from Tommy after I took a picture of him. As soon as the show ended and they came off the stage I tried to get a hold of Toby to take a quick picture before we had to leave to catch the train back. So after he took a pic I tapped his arm and asked if we could get a quick picture. He told me "Of course you can." So we took a pic and I thanked him. Before we left I wanted to get a t-shirt so on my way to the stand I got knocked over by some drunk dude. After that I deff just wanted to get out of there. So I got my shirt and we left. My friend ended up leaving a complete JK fan and a crush on all of them lol. That night has topped my list of greatest moments.
I will try and upload my pictures tomorrow when I get home from work.
