From Sydney Newspaper:

Getting fit for decadence

You know you'd better get pretty fit in the party department when you're about to start a tour with rock'n'roll bady boy Tommy Lee.

Which is probably why US reality TV sensation Toby Rand delivered a star effort in drinking his way through Sydney last week. The ladies man enlisted the support of his Juke Kartel bandmate Tommy Kende - just in case his beer lifting arm tired - and the pair hit hot watering holes De Nom, Hugo's, Lady Lux and the Glenmore Hotel.

It wasn't all beer and skittles - the lads have begun filming a "rockumentary" to capture their wild US tour alongside Lee and his band Supernova.

The're off to the US next week before returning to kick off the Oz shows in March.

IMAGE WILL IMPRESS-RAND

MELBOURNE rockers Juke Kartel, fronted by spunky (and single) singer Toby Rand, is expected to sign a record deal any day.

The boys said they were in major talks with US and Australian labels, as they picked up some rock'n'roll threads from Chapel St boutique Ed Hardy for their six-week American tour with Supernova -- the made-for-TV band that shot Rand to fame.

And their chances of a contract are sure to increase after signing a management deal with music's bad boy Tommy Lee's people.

The tour reaches our shores in March, when Rand looks forward to launching a new-look band to loyal fans.

"The main thing I want to do is come back to Australia and play shows," he said.

"I think all the people who have seen us play in the past won't recognise us.

"They're going to be impressed we have changed."

The band will also launch a no-holds-barred interactive TV show in the next couple of months, giving fans the chance to win their own concert with the boys.

Rand and bass player Tommy Kende have joined other Aussies for the G'Day USA bandwagon before hooking up with the rest of the band in Miami to start the tour tomorrow.

Juke Kartel
by Paula Hansen
Age: 37

Tommy Lee’s Blunder, Juke Kartel’s Boon

Tommy Lee screwed the pooch last summer, passing up Toby Rand to front his reality-TV-spawned band, Rock Star Supernova. Still on the bill for the RSS world tour, but stealing the show every night with his own hard-rocking Aussie band, Juke Kartel, Toby says, “Coming in 3rd is the best thing that ever happened.”

Since the mid-September TV finale, Juke Kartel has headlined an 18-city club tour, opened 28 RSS shows, and recorded their debut album for an April release. When it slams the charts, uninformed critics will, no doubt, dub them “overnight sensations,” but these are no fresh-from-the-garage amateurs. They’ve been on top downunder for years, opening for Nickelback, The Used, and Killswitch Engage, to name a few.

Impatient fans needing their hard-rock Juke fix prompted a 4-track teaser CD to be sold at their gigs, including the indelible “Throw it Away,” performed on the TV show, a phenomenal acoustic version of the same, the sensuous “December,” and “Save Me,” which has a distinctly metal edge.

Even at 10 bucks a pop, hundreds fly off the merch tables each night. No surprise. Juke’s Myspace has over 730,000 streaming audio plays. Fellow openers, The Panic Channel with Dave Navarro, and Rock Star Supernova themselves have fewer than 600K plays each.
Forget the TV show - as if you haven’t already - Toby and Juke Kartel are the hands-down victors on stage, tagged “best performance of the night” by reviewers and fans alike. Pretty damned impressive for just 20 minutes and no stage set - just five sinfully-talented musicians dripping with adrenaline and sweat, playing their hearts out, and flat-out killing it. f*ck the seizure-inducing strobes and over-the-top theatrics. No costumes or gimmicks here. It’s all T-shirts and Converse and unadulterated rock.

Halle-f*cking-lujah! Rock-n-Roll Lives!

Here's a very cute story from the Wellington, New Zealand show.

Young rocker meets stars
By JUDITH LACY - Tribune | Friday, 30 March 2007
She's got the mesh gloves and stud arm band and now Jaime Rivers has met rock stars Supernova.

The Tiritea eight year old was at the American band's Wellington concert last week when she approached Toby Rand, lead singer for support act Juke Kartel, to autograph her jacket.
He took a shine to the pint-size rock chick and Jaime got to go back stage and meet Supernova including drummer Tommy Lee. Her favourite is frontman Lukas Rossi, who won the position in last year's TV singing contest Rock Star Supernova. Jaime had pictures taken with the rockers and Rossi copied a tattoo on his arm onto the sleeve of her jacket. Jaime says guitarist Gilby Clarke (ex-Guns N' Roses) kept saying ``dude'' while Lee wouldn't be quiet and made fun of her.
When The Tribune visited Jaime she pulled a felt tip pen out of her drawer: ``This is the vivid that they all touched,'' she says proudly.
She's named one of her sheep Lukas and two others after Rock Star contestants Dilana and Storm.

Jaime's family reckon her love of rock music started in the womb her mum Tanya enjoys it too and says Creed is the only music her daughter would go to sleep to when young.
At three Jaime liked ACDC and Metallica. She's a seasoned concert goer having been to shows by The Bleeders, 48 May, Shihad and The Feelers.
She loves anything with skulls on even her gumboots are covered in them.

When she grows up Jaime wants to be a drummer, sell the mirrors she makes, teach people to play the drums and be in a rock band. She's already taking piano lessons and plays along to the DVD of Rock Star Supernova.

Juke Kartel doco deal looms
MELBOURNE'S Toby Rand, star of last year's Rockstar: Supernova, and the boys from his band Juke Kartel are close to selling their documentary.

They performed at pay-TV's Logies equivalent, the Astras, in Sydney on Monday night and impressed Foxtel executives.
If the rock-doco goes ahead, it will follow the boys as they gig around the country and continue to capitalize on Rand's stint last year on reality TV series RockStar: Supernova.

A song by the group, Throw It Away, has had thousands of hits on its MySpace site.

While a major Aussie label hasn't signed the band, it is likely to get a deal in the US.

An article in the Herald Sun today...no image with it.

Rand's band strikes deal.

After a couple of years trying since the huge Rockstar phenomenon, Melbourne singer Toby Rand and his band Juke Kartel finally have the record deal they've worked so hard to get.

Confidential can reveal the boys are now in Seattle working on a debut album, after signing with independant label Emporium.

After Rockstar in 2006 the band had a few near record deals.

Rodman jets in to raise hell

FLAMBOYANT former NBA basketball superstar Dennis Rodman jetted into the country yesterday, and immediately had trouble at Sydney airport.

Rodman was questioned by Customs staff at the airport on the veracity of his entry card into the country.

A Customs official asked Rodman's assistant whether Dennis had read the form before he filled it out, and double-checked he didn't have any criminal convictions.

"That's everywhere that I go, they think that I'm just this crazy nut - that I just cause trouble everywhere that I go," he said.

"I may have a problem getting out. I'm clear now, but I've got 10 days here to give it hell, baby."

Rodman's 10-day trip didn't start well because his luggage was also lost.

His people were scouring Sydney yesterday for size 13 shoes.

"Who has size 13 feet in this city besides a swim team," he laughed.

Rodman will join Toby Rand next Friday night at CQ nightclub for the launch of their venture Allstars TV.

Watch out local girls, Rodman is on the hunt.

"Most of the time when you're in clubs or bars, I have four or five girls around me, and stuff like that," he said.

"The hard part is trying to pick which one is going to be the coolest one for the next day . . . that's the hardest part."

Dennis Rodman is after female company in Melbourne

MELBOURNE ladies have been warned: notorious wildman and former basketball bad boy Dennis Rodman is in town, he's after some female company and he "can't wait to get started".

Larger than life, Rodman had business class rapping with him en route from Sydney.

Sin City was "almost cool" but he expects bigger things from Melbourne. "I am here to have a lot of fun and if anyone knows how to have fun it's me," he said.

Over the next few days, he plans to check out the nightlife with some well-qualified tour guides - the boys from rock band Juke Kartel.

Rodman and the band are working together on a new television show, Allstars TV, and will film a pilot at city nightspot CQ Bar on Friday night. The show features interviews with extreme sports athletes, musicians and celebrities, as well as music by the band.

"The show is about extremes and Dennis is perfect to be involved because he is larger than life," frontman Toby Rand said.

"We are going to take him around and show him what Melbourne has to offer.

"We will go to some bars and we will do some jamming."

Juke Kartel Sign With Emporium

by Paul Cashmere - April 2 2008

Juke Kartel, the Aussie band featuring Rockstar Supernova runner-up Toby Rand, has signed with Sydney indie Emporium Music.

The band has been recording in Seattle at London Bridge Studios with Rick Parashar (Pearl Jam, Alice In Chains, Bon Jovi).

Emporium Music has gradually been building a catalogue of Australian acts including the Noll Brothers, Justin Murphy, Erik Simms and Sergey Lazarev.

Dimitri Pavicevic, Chairman of Emporium Music in Australia said in a statement: "Juke Kartel is exactly what I envisioned when I started the label; great music and that's where it begins and ends.

In today's world of corporate one-hit wonders, there is a lack of long term support for new artists in developing talent at major labels.

Emporium Music's goal is to give Artists the opportunity to be just that, Artists, and give them the nurturing environment in which to thrive artistically. I am happy to welcome Juke Kartel to the Emporium Music family and look forward to a very long and successful relationship."

"The band is very excited to have signed a global deal with Emporium Music as it is a motivated and cutting edge label, which, most importantly believes in the music," added Harvey Russell, Juke Kartel's manager.

"The music industry is currently changing shape, the normal business model for releasing an artist is evolving with technology everyday.

JK and Emporium Music will build on JK's strong online fanbase, using web tools that deliver great quality music and video to their dedicated fans. This makes Emporium Music the perfect label for Juke Kartel.

The Juke Kartel album will be released in August.

Tommy goes wild in Melbourne

HE has a reputation as one of the truly hard party boys of rock, and that was only enhanced after a wild night on the town in Melbourne on Saturday.

Tommy Lee kicked up a storm in the VIP booth at Prahran nightclub Boutique, surrounded by a bevy of blondes.

Lee arrived with Melbourne band Juke Kartel about 10.30pm.

Lead singer Toby Rand met Lee when he competed on the RockStar: Supernova TV series two years ago.

Rand has become a firm friend of the Motley Crue drummer.

Pamela Anderson's former husband was in Melbourne to play at the Climate Music Festival at Birrarung Marr.

He let his hair down at Boutique, consuming many a bottle of classy Dom Perignon.

Club sources said Lee danced on the tables and wasn't shy introducing himself to women.

They said he was one of the easiest celebrities they have dealt with, showing that his reputation as a party boy doesn't mean he's difficult.

Lee, with some of the blonde Pamela Anderson lookalikes in tow, left the club close to 2am by his own secret exit.

From Melbourne (Vic) Herald/Sun's "Confidential" (Tues 21st Oct)
The heading read "Ballarat to Bel Air" in Bold print, across the top (Full width of the page)

What will they do with the other two bedrooms, Guestrooms for the ST maybe? :flirt:

(Have they been to Ballarat? For those unsure, Ballarat is about an hours drive NW of Melb)

Ok gals well a girl at work told me about Juke Kartel in the Zoo mag from the 12th of Jan 09
I cant upload a pic as my friggin camera has shit itself so I'll type what it says:
It's under the heading "Two other albums also out this week"
Fergie loves these guys, and while having an aging former ice addict with the facial structure of an aggravated blowfish lusting after your band inst a glowing endorsement, the slickly tarted-up arena rock of Toby Rand and co (y'know, the Melbourne singer who came third in Rock Star Supernova) bursts out with verying degrees of hookiness that goes down all right - when it's not trying too hard to sound like the woeful US anus bleed of Nickleback and Creed, that is
4 stars out of 5

and APPARENTLY you can listen to it again online...
But either I am very challenged....or it isn't there yet.

PLEASE let me now if you have more luck than I have had!

RED CARPE INJECTION:http://www.redcarpetinjection.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/12/issue-four.pdf

Toby, I bet you’re glad you didn’t end up winning Rockstar: Supernova?

Toby: I am now! A lot of Australians have asked the same question. The music that Rockstar was producing wasn’t my cup of tea so I’m lucky that as a band, we got all these opportunities after the show and as much as I loved the show, I’m so glad I didn’t
win.

What made you resist the temptation to get a rushed album out there and instead waited to record the new album?

Toby: With the guys that we worked with in L.A, it felt rushed, we sat there and we looked at each other and it didn’t feel right. So we relinquished our duties with our old management and started fresh, and now we’re doing a more grassroots thing and the time is right. It’s not ‘The guy from the TV show’ anymore, and I’m so much happier for it.

Tommy: We’ve been together for six or seven years, and the amount we’ve learnt over the last two years.. you can’t buy that sorta stuff. We’ve grown so much as a band, and we’re ready to tackle the world.

What can we expect from the new album?

Toby: The new album is a journey over the last five years. We’ve got a lot of tracks that we wrote six years ago, aswell as six months ago. It’s very emotional, at the same time very fun. We have a lot of piano, strings, big guitars, really well produced songs which, to us, sound like stadium rock in the U.S.A.

What made you decide upon Save Me as the first single off the album?

Tommy: We had.. not arguments but ideas as a band. What we came up with was that the first single has to represent us as a rock band, and we’ve got ballads and different songs on the album, but a rock song is what we should come out with. It will lay the foundations for the listeners to know who Juke Kartel are.

You toured throughout the U.S and Canada with Supernova, was there any thought of setting up shop in America and focus specifically on the American market?

Tommy: Two years ago, when Toby came off the show, that’s what we thought. What we realised after doing those tours was that everything was being rushed, so we wanted to go back to the grassroots and do what we, as a team, wanted to do.

Toby: We are setting up shop in the U.S next month, but we are an Aussie band and we wanted to come home, set the foundations, and then you guys will love us even more once we’re huge in the states [laughs].

You’ve been on television, you’ve gotten massive airplay with Throw it Away and Save Me, you’ve got a huge online presence with the street teams, and you tour nonstop. What is there left to do to get the most exposure?

Toby: It’s definitely the touring. We’ve set ourselves up and it’s now time to present ourselves to as many people as possible. Next year we have ambitions to really hit the U.S circuit, for the next month we’re doing festivals and 15-16 shows with more being booked along the way.

Tommy: And there is so much more happening aswell that we are having meetings about. We just supported Seether’s tour and they’re trying to work something out. There’s a lot happening

EXPRESS ADVOCATE: http://express-advocate-wyong.whereilive.com.au/lifestyle/story/juke-kartels-rock-rebel-frontman/

THE Central Coast Express Advocate was privy to a sprinkling of rock’n’roll rebellion from Juke Kartel frontman Toby Rand last week.

Speaking on his mobile phone while cruising the streets of Geelong, we challenged Rand on his flouting of the road rules.

“Whatever,” he laughed, “I’m multitasking.”

And the ability to juggle several tasks at once will be paramount for Rand and his bandmates over the next few months.Rand, guitarists Dale Winters and Todd Burman, bass player Tommy Kende and drummer Jay Pinfold, have kicked off a 28-date national tour to coincide with the release of debut album Nowhere Left To Hide.

“I’m excited about getting out there and playing some shows and reaching as many people as possible,” Rand said.

The band will play The Chilli Lounge at The Grand Hotel, Wyong, on April 2, for one of the most intimate gigs on the tour.

“Every single show we treat like the audience is there on the stage with us,” Rand said. “This show at Wyong looks like it’s going to be one of those old-school pub gigs with people really sweating it up. “We always want to deliver the best show possible for the punters and these smaller gigs are just that more in your face.”

Rand initially found fame in 2006 as a solo artist on US reality show Rockstar: Supernova but after his exit from the show he came home to do things his way with Juke Kartel. He said the band’s debut album release had been a long-time coming.

“It was a matter of finding the right place and the right time,” he said. “I’m glad we took our time because we’ve got an album we’re all so proud of,” he said. “We’ve really developed our sound and the album is a reflection on who we are.”

MICK Barnett is hoping that the buzz of his tattoo machine does not stop next Wednesday.

The tattoo artist at Ink Fixation in Church St is donating a full day's taking to a breast cancer charity.
"On Wednesday May 12, our takings will be going to Dragons Abreast Australia," he said.

"It's a good charity and I hope that people come in and get there tattoo done then.
"It would be great to be really busy, so people can call up and book in now."

Mr Barnett said the idea came up after the mother of a member from the band Juke Kartel was diagnosed with breast cancer.
"We had a bit of a chat about what we could do and decided that we would donate to a breast cancer charity," he said.

"We looked at a few different charities and then decided on Dragons Abreast."
"There will also be a donation jar for people who do not want a tattoo but want to donate.
"I am open from 11am so anyone who wants to pop down and get a tattoo next Wednesday should come down."

EXPAT Aussie band Juke Kartel are coming home - temporarily.

Fronted by Toby Rand, who gained fame appearing on US reality series Rock Star: Supernova, Juke Kartel have landed the support slot for Slash's Australian tour, playing Sydney's Hordern Pavilion on August 16.

Its perfect timing for the LA-based band, who release a new album, Levolution, in Australia and the US this year through American label Carved Records.

"It's a lot about Australia at the moment, which is really good," Rand said.

Juke Kartel struck up a friendship with Slash last year, supporting one of his shows at The Troubadour. They then travelled with him to Norway, sharing the stage with Ozzy Osbourne, Fergie and Ronnie Wood.

"We hang out at his house a lot and he's become a really big supporter, a great mate and mentor," said Rand of the veteran Guns N' Roses rocker.

From 12pm to 2am, there is music all day and night long! I was assigned to cover three bands for the day, my first being Juke Kartel.
They were performing at The Roxy. Such an awesome set up. Great size stage, and perfect layout with chair and booths and stools. They were very fun to watch, the main photo above is a snap from their performance. They reminded me of Collective Soul but the with balls of Guns and Roses, really great sound. This summer they opened the Australian leg of Slash’s world tour and on September 28th will introduce their own brand of rock to stages across America."

Oh yes! I love this review, all the BIG names mentioned, which is GREAT!.. (and Big 'Pftt' to this one)...http://doubtfulsounds.net/2010/08/31/review-slash-hordern-pavilion-sydney-160810/

Umm, but not too sure about 'Underground Club Scene of Melbourne".. sounds a little seedy and secretive!

(lol... as I type this, I have "Max" (foxtell) on, I can hear "Somebody Told Me" in the other room... always makes me think of Toby of RSSN)

I love this! What a great interview. Ryan just let him talk and talk and talk which is great.

The added soundtrack of the tattoo gun made me laugh...
